[Adrit] Welcome back to Adrit's Wonder Lab! Today's question is a wild one: what if you could paint your house and turn it into a power station?

[Adrit] That is the idea behind solar paint. Normal solar panels are big, heavy glass rectangles that sit on a roof. Solar paint is a liquid full of tiny materials that react to sunlight, so you could brush or spray it onto a wall, a fence, a shed, even a water tank.

[Adrit] There are a few different kinds scientists are testing. One type works a bit like a super thin solar panel, catching sunlight and turning it into electricity. Another amazing version pulls water vapour out of the air and uses sunlight to split it into hydrogen, which can be stored and burned as clean fuel. Paint that makes fuel out of thin air! I had to read that twice.

[Adrit] Why does this matter? Roofs are only one small part of a building. Walls are much bigger. If walls could make energy too, buildings could power themselves without burning coal or gas, and that means less pollution warming up our planet.

[Adrit] It is not finished yet. Right now solar paint makes much less electricity than a proper solar panel, and scientists are still working on making it last for years in the rain and sun. That is normal. Every great invention spends a long time being not quite good enough first.

[Adrit] Here's what I love about it. Someone looked at a boring wall and asked, what else could this be? That question is what inventing is. You can ask it about anything around you today.

Sunshine power test

โฑ 1 afternoon

You'll need

  • 4 same-size cups or jars of water
  • Sheets of black, white and silver foil paper
  • A thermometer
  • A sunny spot
  • Notebook

Steps

  1. 1Wrap one cup in black paper, one in white, one in foil, and leave one plain.
  2. 2Fill all four with the same amount of cold water and record the starting temperature.
  3. 3Put all four cups in the same sunny place at the same time.
  4. 4Check and record the temperature of each cup every 15 minutes for an hour.
  5. 5Draw a bar chart of your results.
  6. 6Which colour soaked up the most sun energy? Which reflected it away?
  7. 7Now think like an inventor: what colour would you make a solar paint, and what colour would you paint a hot city roof?
