[Adrit] Hello explorers, and welcome to my very first episode of Adrit's Wonder Lab! Today we are talking about something that smells a bit funny but is honestly magic: compost. [Adrit] So what is compost? When you throw away a banana peel, an apple core or some old leaves, tiny living things โ bacteria, fungi and worms โ get to work. They munch, munch, munch until all that food scrap turns into dark, crumbly soil. That soil is called compost, and gardeners call it black gold. [Adrit] Here's the part that blew my mind. When food scraps go into a normal rubbish bin, they get squashed under everything else with no air. That makes a gas called methane, which heats up our planet. But when the same scraps go into a compost bin with air, they turn into food for plants instead. Same banana peel โ completely different ending! [Adrit] My favourite compost helper is the worm. A worm can eat about half its own body weight every single day. Imagine eating half of yourself in bananas. That's a lot of bananas. [Adrit] What can go in? Fruit and veggie scraps, tea leaves, egg shells, dry leaves, and torn up paper or cardboard. What should stay out? Meat, dairy, oily food and anything plastic. Those make the bin smelly and attract animals we don't want. [Adrit] If your compost ever smells bad, it usually just needs two things: some dry brown stuff like leaves or shredded paper, and a good stir so air can get in. Air is the secret ingredient. [Adrit] Here's my challenge for you. For one week, collect your fruit and veggie scraps in a container instead of the bin. At the end of the week, look at how much you saved from landfill. It's always more than you expect. [Adrit] Composting is a small action, but if lots of us do it, it becomes a big one. Thanks for listening to my first ever episode. Keep exploring, and I'll see you next time. ๐๐ฑโป๏ธ
